Does Nylon and Elastane Shrink? A Buyer's Guide to Invista Nylon 66 and Patterned Performance Fabric

If you're sourcing Invista nylon 66 or a branded material like COOLMAX®, CORDURA®, or LYCRA®, there's one question I get more than any other: does nylon and elastane shrink?

Short answer: it depends. That's not a dodge—it's the honest answer. Whether a nylon/elastane fabric shrinks depends on the weave, the finish, the heat-setting process, and the washing temperature. But it depends isn't helpful unless I tell you how to figure out your situation.

I've spent the last seven years managing fabric procurement for a mid-sized garment manufacturer. I approve roughly $250,000 in materials every year, and I've tracked every purchase order in our cost system since 2018. In that time, I've compared dozens of suppliers, tested fabrics across three production seasons, and built a simple decision tree for choosing between nylon, polyester, and blended performance fabrics. Here's my take.

This is accurate as of early 2025. Fiber grades, mill capabilities, and finishing tech change fast, so verify current specs before you commit.

First, the shrinkage answer you actually need

Nylon and elastane can shrink. But it's not automatic.

Nylon 66 (the 66 refers to hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid—both six-carbon) has a higher melting point and better dimensional stability than standard nylon 6. Nylon 66 melts at around 255°C, which is part of why it holds up better in high-heat finishing. In practical terms, properly heat-set nylon 66 resists shrinkage better than a lot of cheap nylon 6 out there. But if a mill cuts corners on relaxation or uses a low-quality dye house, even good fiber can end up in a bad fabric.

Elastane—the generic term for spandex/LYCRA® fiber—is what makes a fabric stretch and recover. The tradeoff: elastane is sensitive to heat, chlorine, and aggressive mechanical action. So a nylon/elastane blend with poor finishing or excessive heat can shrink, warp, or lose stretch.

What I tell our design team: don't ask does it shrink? Ask under what conditions will this specific fabric shrink? Then test it.

Scenario 1: You're specifying for performance apparel

If you need a light, durable, quick-drying fabric for activewear, running tops, or base layers, Invista nylon 66 is usually a better choice than polyester. That sounds counterintuitive to buyers who look at price per yard first. Polyester is cheaper. But over the life of a garment, nylon 66 can outperform it in abrasion resistance and stretch recovery.

For a concrete textile example, look at a 70-denier nylon 66 ripstop with 8-12% elastane. It packs small, dries quickly, and can handle repeated wash cycles if the mill has heat-set it correctly. A similar polyester fabric might cost a little less per yard, but if your customer returns more garments due to pilling or sagging, the cheap fabric gets expensive fast.

I learned this the hard way in 2022. The numbers said switch to a lower-cost polyester woven for a sportswear program. It would have saved us roughly $0.14 per yard. My gut said run a wear test first. We did. After 20 washes, the polyester faded more, and the knee panel lost shape. We stayed with nylon and ended up avoiding a $1,200 rework batch. That's the kind of hidden cost that doesn't show up on a quote.

If your application is compression wear or fitted garments, add LYCRA® fiber. The brand isn't just a label—it comes with certified mills and a consistent elastane quality spec. Unbranded elastane can vary from lot to lot, which is a nightmare when you're trying to control shrinkage.

Scenario 2: You're sourcing upholstery, outdoor, or industrial fabric

For abrasion-heavy uses—backpacks, motorcycle gear, upholstery, workwear—I'd reach for CORDURA® fabric before almost anything else. Cordura is an Invista brand built on high-tenacity nylon 66, usually with a textured or air-jet spun yarn. It's not the cheapest option. But in high-wear environments, it has a track record of outlasting standard nylon and polyester.

A patterned performance fabric in this category might be a CORDURA® fabric with a woven dobby pattern or a printed camo pattern. The pattern is usually the easy part. The harder part is making sure the pattern doesn't compromise the coating, the abrasion resistance, or the water repellency.

Here's where the buyer's mindset pays off: compare the total cost of ownership, not just the base price. A CORDURA®-branded fabric can cost substantially more per yard than an unbranded nylon. But if it extends product life, reduces warranty claims, and lets you charge a premium, the math often works in your favor.

One surprise in this category: the certification/logo process. If your customer wants to use the Invista Textiles UK logo on a hangtag or packaging, make sure the mill is an authorized supplier for that brand. You can't just print the logo because you bought the fabric. I've seen a two-week delay when the logo approval wasn't set up before production. Not a technical failure—a paperwork one.

Does nylon and elastane shrink in upholstery? Less common, because most upholstery fabric isn't high-stretch. But if you add elastane for a fitted slipcover or automotive seat cover, you still need to verify heat-setting and washing specs.

Scenario 3: You're designing athleisure, dresses, or fitted fashion

This is where the nylon vs elastane shrinkage question gets real. A typical athleisure fabric is 70-85% nylon and 15-30% elastane. With that much stretch, the fabric's dimensional stability depends heavily on finishing.

Key things to check before you approve production:

  • Heat-setting temperature. If the mill heat-sets the fabric below the required temperature, it will shrink in the first wash.
  • Washing instructions. Nylon/elastane blends perform best in cold water, low heat, and mild detergent. Hot water and dryer heat are the main culprits.
  • Chlorine. Elastane and chlorine don't mix. If your product goes in a pool, don't expect the stretch to last forever.
  • Fabric construction. A tight jersey with high twist yarn behaves differently from a loose woven mesh.

I know that sounds like a generic checklist. But the aha for me was realizing that the fabric's shrinkage is already decided by the time it reaches my loading dock. I can't fix it with a better washing instruction label. I have to prevent it by choosing the right yarn and mill.

What if your designer wants a patterned performance fabric for leggings? Go for it—just build in a shrinkage test at the sampling stage, not after bulk production. Order an extra 2-3 yards from the approved mill, run it through your final wash cycle, and measure the width/length change.

For this category, a branded LYCRA® fiber with certified stretching specs is a genuinely useful anchor. Unbranded elastane may pass an initial stretch test but perform inconsistently after dyeing.

Scenario 4: You're on a tight budget and polyester is tempting

Let's be honest: sometimes polyester is the right answer. If the product has low performance requirements, a short lifecycle, or a retail price that can't support nylon 66, go with polyester. That's not a failure. It's a smart business decision.

The mistake is choosing polyester without realizing what you gave up. In my experience, the gap shows up in:

  • Abrasion resistance
  • Stretch recovery
  • Dye depth and colorfastness
  • Dimensional stability under heat

If those don't matter for your end user, polyester is basically fine. If they matter, a premium fiber is cheaper than the rework.

I also don't believe in always buying the branded option. I've tested unbranded nylon 66 that performed admirably. But I need the mill to provide the fiber cert, the test data, and the consistency history before I trust it. That's not brand loyalty—that's due diligence.

How to decide which scenario you're in

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. What is the end user doing with the fabric? Abrasion-heavy outdoor gear = CORDURA® territory. Sweaty activewear = nylon 66/COOLMAX® territory. Fashion basics = depends on price and drape.
  2. How much stretch does the garment need? Less than 10% stretch, polyester can work. More than 15% stretch, you want a quality elastane and a heat-set nylon.
  3. Where will the finished item fail if shrinkage happens? A slightly shorter curtain might be acceptable. A tight-fitting legging that rides up after washing will come back as a return.

If you still can't decide, order a small trial from the mill. Run it through your wash test, your wear test, and your cost model. That's what a TCO spreadsheet is for.

Bottom line: Invista nylon 66 isn't automatically better than polyester. It's better for specific jobs. CORDURA® fabric is worth the premium in wear-heavy applications. LYCRA® fiber is worth the certified consistency in stretch products. And yes, nylon and elastane can shrink—but the right fiber, the right mill, and the right testing plan can prevent it.

There's something satisfying about a fabric spec that passes every test and doesn't blow the budget. It takes homework. It's not the cheapest fabric. But it's usually the cheapest outcome.
