How to Choose Upholstery Fabric: 6 Steps That Would've Saved Me $11,000

If you're choosing upholstery fabric for a sofa, a reupholstery project, or a restaurant banquette, this checklist is for you.

But here's the pitfall I hit repeatedly: abrasion numbers measure a fabric in a lab. They don't tell you how it performs when it's dirty, when sunlight hits it, when someone drags a zipper across it.

I went back and forth between the brocade satin and a durable velvet for two weeks. The brocade was the star—anyone walking in would focus on it. The velvet was the sensible choice; it would hide wear and survive daily life. Ultimately I chose the brocade because the project was a formal parlor, not a family room.

Three months later, a guest's belt buckle pulled a thread in the seat back. Then a bracelet added another snag. The client's cat finished the job. The lesson: Chinese brocade satin fabric is decoration, not armor.

Loose weaves, floating yarns, and raised patterns are vulnerable. If you love the look, use it on a decorative pillow or a chair that doesn't get daily use. If the sofa needs to survive, choose a tight, dense weave.

Checkpoint: Snag the sample with a fingernail. A fabric that pulls easily won't improve with age.

Step 5: Match the Fabric to the Actual Application

West Elm makes some genuinely beautiful furniture. Their upholstered pieces are designed for residential use, and many use performance fabrics. But "performance" is a broad label, and "sold at West Elm" doesn't mean "indestructible."
