The Fabric Comparison Nobody Shows You

But the unit price doesn't tell you about longevity, performance retention, or replacement frequency.
When I audited our 2023 spending, I found something uncomfortable. The white polyester mesh products we'd installed in 2021 for our outdoor furniture line were failing at the 18-to-24-month mark. For our apparel division, cotton jersey has been the most interesting material we've worked with. Hidden Costs, Dyeing, and the Rustoleum Question

Dyeing and finishing. Polyester mesh takes disperse dyes at lower temperatures and hits color tolerance quickly. Cotton jersey needs more water, more energy, and careful tension control. Nylon 66 sits in between but can be tricky with certain dye classes. Eco claims. Many customers assume cotton is the "natural" and therefore "sustainable" choice. That's a claim you need to substantiate before you put it on a hang tag. Choose white polyester mesh when:
- The application is indoor or covered outdoor
- You're building a seasonal or promo product with a shorter lifecycle
- You're willing to budget for a protective coating or recoat program
- Price is the customer's primary buying criterion (retail patio sets, shade structures)
Choose cotton jersey when:
- You're spec'ing apparel, not furniture
- Comfort and moisture absorption are the selling points
- You have a supplier who can consistently hold Pantone tolerance (get lab dip data before committing)
- You blend it with spandex or Lycra—we use 4% INVISTA Lycra in ours, and the recovery difference is dramatic
And regardless of what you choose, track cost per year of service rather than cost per yard. Vendor lifespan claims are optimistic.
Bottom Line
