Comparison framework: price per yard isn’t the starting point
I manage purchasing for a 400-person company across three locations. That’s about $250,000 a year in uniforms, upholstery, carpet, and industrial materials, spread across eight vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so the purchase order has to survive two sets of questions. When I took over the role in 2020, I thought I’d be comparing prices. Turns out, I spend more time comparing what a supplier isn’t telling me.
Most buyers focus on the obvious stuff—unit price, color, hand feel—and completely miss the overlooked stuff: finishing charges, lot traceability, testing data, and what “standard” actually means. The question everyone asks is, “What’s the best fabric?” The question they should ask is, “What’s the full cost per useful year?”
So here’s the comparison framework I use when the choice comes down to Invista nylon 66 and a common polyester spandex knit fabric:
- Durability under real use
- Stretch, recovery, and comfort
- Environmental claims and microplastics
- Total cost transparency
The goal is to help you decide, not to declare one fiber “the best.” Because in procurement, the right answer changes with the application. During our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I had to standardize specs across three locations, and this comparison became the core of the whole exercise.
Dimension 1: Durability in carpet, upholstery, and workwear
When a spec says Invista nylon, it’s usually referring to nylon 66. That’s different from nylon 6 and very different from polyester pile. In carpet, the difference shows up in hallway traffic. We replaced a polyester carpet tile at one of our sites with an Invista carpet fiber spec—nylon 66—and after four years, I can still see the vacuum lines but not the heavy wear patterns. The old carpet looked tired after two.
For upholstery and heavy workwear, nylon 66 is also the safer choice. It has a higher melting point than nylon 6, and it resists abrasion better than standard polyester. But here’s the catch: it’s not automatically better for every use. Nylon can be less breathable, and it can yellow or degrade if the finish is wrong. I’ve had nylon fabrics that were fantastic, and I’ve had ones that felt like plastic sheeting. Fiber chemistry matters, but finish and construction matter just as much.
The unexpected part? The failures I’ve seen with polyester spandex knit fabric weren’t usually the polyester. It was the knit structure and the finish. A 92 polyester 8 spandex knit from one mill can have a different yarn count, dye lot, or finishing chemistry than the same spec from another mill. In my first year, I assumed “same fiber content” meant the same fabric. Didn’t verify. That assumption cost us a $600 reorder.
Dimension 2: Stretch and recovery in a 92 polyester 8 spandex knit
Let’s talk about the garment side. If you’re ordering polo shirts, team uniforms, or light jackets, 92 polyester 8 spandex is probably on the shortlist. The polyester gives the fabric shape, color, and wrinkle resistance. The 8% spandex gives it stretch. That blend is popular because it’s comfortable and it holds up well in corporate settings.
But spandex isn’t a commodity in my experience. I pay attention to whose spandex is specified. If a fabric says Invista Lycra fiber, I have a phone number and a traceability trail. If it just says “spandex,” I ask for more information. The generic label doesn’t tell me whether the fiber will retain its stretch after 20, 30, or 40 washes. And that’s the real test.
We had two identical-looking 92/8 knits behave completely differently after a few months. One still snapped back at the elbows and knees. The other bagged out. That’s not a visual difference you can catch in a 5-inch hand sample. It’s a wash-test difference.
So when I compare nylon and this polyester blend for apparel, I don’t compare them on paper. I compare recovery after washing, pilling after abrasion, and what the supplier can prove. A lower price is meaningless if the garment fails before the first budget cycle ends.
Dimension 3: Does polyester have microplastics? The uncomfortable comparison
This is the question that makes everyone uncomfortable. Does polyester have microplastics? Yes. Polyester is a synthetic fiber, and synthetic fibers shed microplastic particles during washing and wear. A polyester spandex knit fabric will shed microfibers. The amount depends on construction and wash number, and it doesn’t disappear after the first wash. Nylon also sheds. Spandex sheds. There is no honest way to say “one of these is plastic-free.”
I’m not going to pretend one number applies to every fabric. The amount of shedding depends on fiber type, construction, wash conditions, and how many times the item has been washed. That’s why the real question for a supplier is: “What test method did you use, and what were the results?” If they can’t show the data, I assume they don’t track it. Honestly, I don’t expect every supplier to have a perfect answer. But I do expect them to know what they don’t know.
This is also where the FTC Green Guides matter. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental claims must be truthful and substantiated. If a supplier says a fabric is “eco-friendly” because it’s “recyclable,” I ask: recyclable where? The FTC’s guidance on “recyclable” claims says an unqualified claim should only be made if recycling access exists for a substantial majority of consumers—at least 60% in the relevant area. If the supplier can’t answer that, the claim is basically a word.
My frustration with this is personal. The most frustrating part of vendor management is hearing the same vague phrase—“sustainable,” “green,” “eco-conscious”—without a test method behind it. You’d think environmental claims would have a universal standard. They don’t. That’s why I ask for the source.
Total cost: the transparency lesson I keep learning
Here’s where I’ll be clear about my bias. I’d rather see a higher upfront price with all costs itemized than a lower quote with hidden extras. That’s not a moral stance; it’s a budgeting stance. When a vendor can’t itemize finishing, testing, shipping, and minimum order charges, I assume they’re hiding something.
The vendor who couldn’t provide proper invoice detail cost us $2,400 in rejected expenses. I had approved the purchase based on a single line-item quote. The final invoice added “finishing fees” and “setup charges” that were mentioned nowhere in the quote. Finance rejected it. I looked bad. Now I ask one question early: “What’s NOT included in this price?”
So my selection advice, after five years and too many orders to count:
- Choose Invista nylon 66 if the job is about abrasion, long-term wear, and high-traffic use—carpet, upholstery, bags, workwear. Ask for test data on abrasion and colorfastness.
- Choose a 92 polyester 8 spandex knit fabric if the job is about stretch, color, and comfort—uniforms, activewear, team apparel. Verify the spandex brand and the wash-test results.
- Don’t choose either one based only on a “sustainability” label. Ask for third-party data and a clear answer on microplastics. Per the FTC, claims need substantiation.
Bottom line: fiber brands like Invista give me a traceability advantage, not a magic bullet. If a spec says Invista nylon or Invista Lycra, I know who made the polymer. But I still need the mill’s construction data, the finish spec, and a transparent invoice. That combination—good material, honest pricing, and verifiable performance—is what actually makes a purchasing decision work.
