The $3,200 assumption

A client of mine runs a small outdoor furniture brand. They were designing a line of patio cushions and wanted a mold-resistant fabric, because their previous supplier had shipped pieces that grew mildew after one humid summer.

When they asked "is nylon fabric breathable?" I didn't hesitate: "No. Go with polyester."

What I found when I actually tested

While troubleshooting, I compared the failed polyester against a nylon sample from a mill that works with Invista's CORDURA platform. The client wasn't asking for Cordura, but I wanted to see if my old belief held up.

It didn't. The nylon 6,6 sample had a higher moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) than the polyester I'd chosen. Water vapor escaped through the nylon faster. If the cushions had been covered with this nylon, moisture wouldn't have pooled against the foam the way it did with the polyester.

That surprised me. I'd always treated breathability as a property of the fiber. It's not. Breathability is a property of the entire fabric construction—fiber type, filament shape, yarn texture, weave density, and chemical finish. A microfiber nylon with textured yarns and a more open weave can breathe far better than a flat-filament polyester in a tight construction.

Nylon 6,6 tends to be stronger and more abrasion-resistant than polyester. Nylon also recovers its shape better after compression, which matters for cushions and upholstery.

But polyester generally handles UV exposure better. A solution-dyed polyester material with UV stabilizers can hold its color for years in direct sun, while untreated nylon will fade. That's a real trade-off for furniture that sits in the sun all day.

For the client's cushions, the better answer was a nylon fabric with a UV-resistant finish and a breathable weave. In hindsight, I should have requested test data from multiple suppliers and compared samples before ordering. At the time, I thought the fiber name was enough to decide. It wasn't.

The mold remover mistake

This part still stings, because it cost me a second time. When the mold appeared, I wanted to fix it fast. I bought a commercial outdoor fabric mold remover at a hardware store. The label said "bleach-based." I assumed stronger equals better.

I tested it on one cushion's corner. The stain disappeared—but so did the color. The spot turned lighter, then yellowed over the next week. The bleach also stripped the water-repellent finish, so the treated area soaked up moisture even faster than before.

The upside was a clean-looking spot. The risk was damaging the entire piece. I kept asking myself: is a quick fix worth potentially ruining the whole order? But I only asked that after I'd already sprayed it. I should have asked before I picked up the bottle.

Here's the thing about bleach and outdoor fabric: it doesn't discriminate. It kills mold, but it also degrades UV stabilizers, breaks down water-repellent coatings, discolors polyester, and weakens nylon fibers over time. The right approach is a lot less aggressive:

  • Brush off dry mold before applying anything wet.
  • Use a mild soap or a cleaner specifically made for outdoor synthetic fabrics.
  • Scrub with a soft brush—no wire brushes, no abrasive pads.
  • Rinse fully and let the fabric dry completely in the shade.
  • Test the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot first. Always.

And if mold has already soaked into the cushion foam, cleaning the cover won't be enough. You're replacing the insert or the entire cover. Prevention—breathable fabric, proper airflow, and prompt drying—is the only real fix.

My checklist now

After those failures, I pinned a checklist above my desk. It's caught 11 potential mistakes in the past 20 months. If you're sourcing outdoor fabric, this is what it says:

  • Get MVTR data, not just air permeability. For outdoor cushions, moisture vapor transmission is what prevents mold.
  • Order a sample and test before committing to full yardage. A spec sheet is a starting point, not a promise.
  • Ask about UV stabilizers, water-repellent coatings, and moisture management—and request the supplier's test reports.
  • If a branded fiber like Invista's CORDURA or COOLMAX is specified, read the technical documentation on the brand's official website.
  • Set aside a scrap from every delivery and use it for cleaning tests. Don't learn how a fabric reacts to chemicals by ruining finished goods.

When this answer doesn't apply

There are always exceptions, and you should know them before making a decision.

Coated nylon—the kind in budget rain jackets and some tent floors—is not breathable. The coating blocks both air and moisture vapor, and no fiber engineering can fix that. If you need breathability, avoid coated fabrics unless they use a breathable membrane.

A heavyweight, tightly woven nylon with no moisture-management finish won't breathe well either. The fiber's potential only becomes real when the construction takes advantage of it.

And for full-sun outdoor use, polyester with UV-resistant treatment may still be the right call. The goal isn't to pick the "magic" fiber. It's to match the entire material system to the job.

So, is nylon fabric breathable? Yes, when it's designed to be. But I'd rather you walk away with a more useful conclusion: stop choosing fabric based on the fiber name alone. Test data, construction, and finish are what determine performance. I learned that the expensive way—you don't have to.
