Polyester Natural or Synthetic? Is Polyester Fiber Fiberglass? A Nylon Coat Buyer’s Field Guide

I’m a textile buyer who’s handled fiber and fabric orders for 12 years. I’ve personally made—and documented—14 significant sourcing mistakes, totaling roughly $38,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team’s fabric-spec checklist to keep others from repeating my errors.

If you found this because you searched “polyester natural or synthetic” or “is polyester fiber fiberglass,” I’ll give you the quick answer: polyester is synthetic, and ordinary polyester fiber is not fiberglass. But that’s not the real issue for most buyers. The real issue is choosing the right fabric for the job. And that depends on your situation.

There’s no universal answer. Here are the three situations I run into most often:

  • Scenario A: You’re specifying a “nylon coat” and need to know whether nylon is worth the cost.
  • Scenario B: You’re evaluating polyester for apparel or home textiles and trying to sort out the fiberglass confusion.
  • Scenario C: You’re comparing commodity polyester with branded performance fibers like INVISTA COOLMAX or CORDURA.

Scenario A: You’re Specifying a “Nylon Coat”

A “nylon coat” can mean a fashion shell, a lightweight rain jacket, a technical parka, or an industrial workwear layer. Those are very different orders, and they need different specs. The label “nylon” is a starting point, not a finish line.

Nylon is a family of polyamides. The two types you’ll see most are nylon 6 and nylon 66. INVISTA is a major producer of nylon 66, which is often specified when abrasion resistance and higher heat resistance matter. Nylon 6 is easier to dye and can feel softer, but it has a lower melting point and isn’t as stiff.

In my first year (2014), I made the classic mistake: I specified “nylon” without specifying the type. The mill used nylon 6, the customer needed nylon 66, and the wear test failed. It was a 2,000-piece order, $890 in redo, and a 1-week delay.

Now I ask mills for three numbers: fiber type, yarn denier, and weave construction. If any of those is missing, I treat the spec as incomplete.

The counterintuitive part is that a “nylon coat” doesn’t always need nylon. If the coat will hang in a closet and be worn to dinner, a lightweight polyester shell can be lighter and cheaper. If it’s going to survive a motorcycle slide or a construction site, then a CORDURA-grade nylon specification makes sense. I once lost a $3,200 order by over-specifying CORDURA when the customer just needed a clean, black outer shell. The lesson: match the fiber to the actual end use.

Scenario B: Polyester Natural or Synthetic? And Is Polyester Fiber Fiberglass?

Polyester is synthetic. It’s derived from petroleum-based chemicals, not from cotton, wool, or silk. But “synthetic” does not mean “bad.” It means the material behaves differently from natural fibers.

So, is polyester fiber fiberglass? No. Fiberglass is made from molten glass spun into thin fibers. Polyester fiber is a polymer. The only thing they share is the word “fiber.”

The “polyester is fiberglass” thinking comes from an era when early polyester felt stiff, rough, and glassy. This was true 40 years ago, when polyester staple could feel closer to insulation than to clothing. Today’s polyester is engineered with different cross-sections, microfiber versions, and branded finishes like INVISTA COOLMAX that are soft and breathable.

Recycled polyester is still polyester. It may be a better environmental choice than virgin polyester, but it is not a natural fiber. And if a product is labeled “wool” or “cotton” while the shell is actually polyester, that goes beyond a marketing problem. It’s a labeling violation.

The same confusion comes up in home textiles. When I worked on INVISTA Home product specs, I saw 100% polyester upholstery rejected because a designer thought “polyester” meant “fiberglass.” It doesn’t. Polyester is synthetic, but so are nylon and acrylic. The problem was never the material class; it was the quality of the construction and finish.

Per FTC textile labeling rules under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act (ftc.gov), labels must state the generic fiber name and percentage. “Nylon” and “polyester” are not interchangeable. That’s not a style preference—it’s a legal requirement.

Scenario C: Commodity Polyester vs. Branded Fibers Like INVISTA COOLMAX

This is where I see the second most expensive mistake: treating all polyester as the same material. It isn’t.

INVISTA COOLMAX is a polyester fiber, but it’s engineered for moisture management. The fiber shape helps pull sweat away from the skin. That’s why a COOLMAX base layer can feel completely different from a basic polyester t-shirt.

Similarly, CORDURA is a nylon-based fabric with a specific construction and finishing process. It’s not “nylon” in the vague sense. If your spec says “nylon coat” but the wear points need to survive rough surfaces, plain nylon may not do the same job as CORDURA.

What I do now is request a physical sample and a technical data sheet before ordering bulk. The word “polyester” tells me nothing about denier per filament, cross-section, or finish. If someone claims their fabric is “just like COOLMAX,” I ask for the moisture management test report.

For INVISTA Home products, the same principle applies. A stain-resistant carpet and a blackout drapery can both be labeled “100% polyester,” but their construction and finishes are completely different. If the only spec is “polyester,” you haven’t told the mill enough.

If stretch is the goal, Lycra is a common branded spandex fiber. It gets mislabeled all the time, but that’s a separate rabbit hole.

And if you’re marketing recycled polyester, the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov/green-guides) require environmental claims to be substantiated. Don’t call it “green” without proof.

How to Tell Which Scenario You’re In

I use three questions when I’m deciding what to recommend:

  • What is the end use? A coat, a carpet, and a base layer are different problems. Start with the product, not the fiber.
  • What does failure look like? If the garment snags, pills, tears, or traps sweat, you’ll know. Choose the fiber property that prevents that specific failure.
  • What label claim do you need to make? If the spec says “100% nylon,” the finished product has to be 100% nylon. That’s an FTC issue.

If you can’t answer those three questions, the spec isn’t ready for production.

If you’re buying a nylon coat for city wear, I’d start with a nylon shell and a warm lining, but I wouldn’t pay for CORDURA unless there’s a real abrasion risk. If you’re choosing home upholstery and the only objection is “it’s polyester,” ask for a sample and test it, because polyester isn’t fiberglass. If you’re building a technical garment line, branded fibers like INVISTA COOLMAX or CORDURA are usually worth the premium—when the specific performance is actually needed.

I’ve made the mistake of over-specifying one fiber because I thought it was safer. It wasn’t. It was just more expensive.

We’ve caught 47 potential spec errors using this checklist in the past 18 months. Maybe 46, I’d have to check the log. Either way, the pattern is consistent: the expensive mistakes almost always come from a vague word on a spec sheet.

So glad I caught the fiber-content error before the bulk cut. Almost approved the mill’s spec sheet as-is, which would have meant 2,000 jackets labeled “100% nylon” with a polyester shell. Dodged that bullet.

What was best practice in 2015 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals—matching the fiber to the end use—haven’t changed, but the execution has transformed. Depend on testing, not assumptions. Read the label. Ask for the spec. Document what you learn.
