The Real Problem: We Judge All Nylon by Its Cheap Cousin

The surface issue everyone talks about — “nylon feels clammy” — is actually a symptom of two deeper causes:

1. Polymer grade matters more than the generic name

Standard nylon 6 (the kind in $3 activewear) absorbs about 9% moisture by weight, which feels damp against skin. Invista’s nylon 66, however, has a tighter molecular structure. It absorbs less moisture, dries faster, and can be engineered into filaments as fine as 10 denier — finer than silk. Where nylon really shines — and where I underestimated it

Each one would have cost an average of $1,100. That’s $51,700 in avoided waste — far more than the $80 I once thought I’d save by skipping fiber verification.

Looking back, I should have learned this in 2017. At the time, I didn’t know the right questions to ask. The industry has moved fast: nylon 66 fibers today (as of 2025) are not what they were a decade ago. The fundamentals haven’t changed — nylon is still a thermoplastic polyamide — but its execution has transformed. If your go-to move is still “avoid nylon for underwear” or “use any generic nylon for anchors,” you’re basing decisions on a dated playbook.
