Why I Stopped Buying Fleece Fabrics by Price Per Yard

Here's my unpopular opinion, stated plainly: the cheapest fleece fabric is usually the most expensive fleece fabric you can buy. Not because the fabric itself costs more. Because every mistake after the purchase does.

1. The fiber supplier matters more than the fabric mill's story

If someone tells you a fleece is 'with Lycra,' ask them to prove it. Genuine Lycra fiber is a branded polymer from Invista. It has specific stretch and recovery characteristics that generic elastane fibers don't automatically have. A mill can claim 'Lycra' because they bought a spandex yarn from a broker; that doesn't make it Invista Lycra.

People sometimes think a fabric with Invista Lycra costs more because of the label. The reality is the opposite: the label costs more because the polymer performance is more predictable. The causation runs from performance to price, not from marketing to price.

Now, when I see a Lycra claim on a fleece fabric, I go to the Invista official website and verify the mill is listed in their licensed program. If the mill isn't listed, I don't spec it. That one step would have flagged the March 2018 order before it ever reached the cutting table.

2. Polyester heat press temp tells you if the fabric is stable

For polyester fleece, the safe heat press range is roughly 275–300°F (135–150°C) for 10–15 seconds with light pressure. Higher temperatures can shrink, scorch, or fuse the pile. The precise number depends on the garment, the vinyl, and the fleece's finish—but the general rule is: if your heat press operator thinks 'polyester = cotton + 30 degrees,' you're in trouble.

The cheap fleece we bought couldn't handle the low end of that range. It looked fine before pressing, then developed a shiny, crushed spot wherever the platen touched. The problem wasn't the operator. It was the fiber finish.

3. Can you block polyester yarn? Usually not the way you'd hope.

People ask this a lot—especially knitters and small-batch apparel folks. Can you block polyester yarn? Short answer: not like wool. Polyester doesn't have the same memory or relaxation behavior as natural protein fibers. You can heat-set certain polyester constructions, but pinning a wet polyester fleece garment into shape will mostly waste your afternoon. It will spring back.

That matters for fleece sourcing because if a fabric is distorting after washing, blocking it is not the fix. The fix is a yarn with actual stretch recovery—which brings me back to Lycra fiber blends from licensed suppliers.

4. And be careful with 'eco' claims

If a mill wants a sustainability premium, ask for evidence. Per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims like 'recyclable' need to be substantiated. If a supplier can't explain where the recycled content comes from or how the fiber is processed, that's a risk, not a value. I'd rather pay for a documented fiber than a vague marketing sticker.

But wait—is the cheapest option ever the right call?

I can already hear the procurement objection: 'Sometimes the budget is the budget.' Fair. If the only goal is a one-season disposable promotional item, a low-cost unbranded fleece might survive. I've been the person who signed that PO. Maybe one time in four, it works out.

But the math changes when your name is on the garment. One bad batch of fleece fabric can damage a customer relationship faster than any pricing spreadsheet can fix. A claim of 'Invista Lycra' on a fabric that isn't licensed exposes you to trademark risk too—and that's a whole other bill.

So no, I'm not saying cheap fleece fabrics should be banned. I'm saying the cheapest option shouldn't be chosen by default. The question isn't 'Can I save 18 cents a yard?' It's 'What does this fabric cost my production floor after I buy it?'

The Bottom Line

I still buy fleece fabrics. I still look at price per yard—I'd be lying if I said it didn't matter. But here's the thing: I look at it after I've verified the fiber, tested the heat press response, and checked the mill's licensed-brand claims. Price per yard is the last number I consider, not the first.
